A Filipina Nurse, Poet, and Community Leader Receives Strong Commendation from Former Ambassador to Germany
By Amb. Antonio Ma-at
A powerful endorsement from a former Philippine ambassador has brought renewed attention to the remarkable life and contributions of Dorie Reyes Polo, a Filipina nurse, poet, visual artist, and community leader based in Germany whose journey continues to inspire Filipinos both at home and abroad.
In a formal endorsement letter supporting her nomination for the Pamana Presidential Award, former Philippine Ambassador to Germany Melita Sta. Maria-Thomeczek praised Dorie Reyes Polo for her decades of service, cultural advocacy, humanitarian work, and literary achievements, describing her as “an inspiring example of a Filipina in a foreign country who continuously brought out the best of her talents wherever she was.”
The endorsement, dated May 7, 2026, reflects more than official recognition. It is a tribute to a life shaped by perseverance, compassion, creativity, and unwavering pride in Filipino identity.
For many people, Dorie Reyes Polo is known today as an internationally recognized poet and artist whose works explore healing, resilience, faith, and emotional survival. But long before literary recognition reached her, she had already spent decades quietly building a legacy through healthcare service, cultural representation, and community leadership in Germany.
Born in Amadeo, Cavite, Philippines, Dorie grew up in a large Filipino family rooted in discipline, faith, humility, and traditional Filipino values. Those values remained deeply present even after she established life abroad.
One of the earliest examples of her dedication to Filipino culture can be traced back to 1978, when she became active in cultural activities connected to the Philippine Center in Cologne, Germany. At a time when overseas Filipino communities were still developing stronger institutional ties abroad, such cultural programs became important spaces for preserving identity and unity among migrants.
In 1979, she joined a Filipino cultural delegation that represented the Philippines at the Bundesgartenschau in Bonn, West Germany, an international exhibition where participating countries showcased their culture and heritage.
For Dorie, these activities were never simply performances. They reflected her belief that Filipinos abroad carry the responsibility of preserving and representing their heritage wherever they go.
That same spirit of service later became visible in her professional career.
Before becoming widely recognized in literary circles, Dorie Reyes Polo spent many years serving in Germany’s healthcare system. She first studied Midwifery in the Philippines before later pursuing Nursing studies and eventually establishing a respected medical career abroad.
Working in another country’s healthcare environment requires extraordinary perseverance, especially for migrant professionals adapting to a new language, new standards, and demanding medical institutions. Yet Dorie successfully built a career defined by discipline, compassion, and dedication.
Among her professional roles was service as an ICU nurse at Sana Krankenhaus in Hürth, Germany. Intensive care nursing is one of the most emotionally and mentally demanding areas of healthcare, requiring calm decision-making, technical expertise, and emotional resilience under pressure.
Later in her career, she also specialized in wound assessment as well as palliative and oncology care, helping patients facing chronic illness, cancer treatment, and end-of-life conditions.
In her endorsement letter, Ambassador Sta. Maria-Thomeczek specifically highlighted the significance of Dorie’s healthcare service and the positive image she helped uphold for Filipino nurses abroad.
“A dedicated nurse, she was one of the hundreds of Filipina Nurses in Germany who gave dignity to the stature of the Filipina nurse and made possible the positive recognition of our nursing corps,” the ambassador wrote.
The endorsement further described Dorie as compassionate, industrious, diligent, skilled, knowledgeable, and God-fearing—qualities that earned the respect of patients, colleagues, and Filipino communities throughout the years.
But healthcare was only one dimension of her life.
Beyond her professional career, Dorie Reyes Polo became deeply involved in Filipino organizations and migrant communities across Germany and Europe. She actively participated in Babaylan Germany (Philippine Women’s Forum e.V.), an organization focused on supporting Filipino women and families while strengthening cultural identity abroad.
Over time, her community work expanded through the European Network of Filipino Diaspora (ENFID), where she served in several leadership roles, including Treasurer, Auditor, Board Director, and Director of ENFID Germany. She also served as Internal Auditor of PHILNETZ e.V., another organization supporting Filipino representation and cooperation across Europe.
Ambassador Sta. Maria-Thomeczek emphasized the importance of Filipinos who contribute not only through professional success, but also through community involvement and cultural promotion.
“I always admired the courage and zeal of our Filipinas who did not remain in the confines of their professional work but expanded themselves, went out to be part of communities, organizations, extended families,” she wrote.
The endorsement also noted Dorie’s active participation in Filipino community organizations and her efforts to help preserve and promote Filipino culture in Germany, particularly in the North Rhine-Westphalia region.
For overseas Filipinos, cultural preservation often becomes deeply meaningful. Living far from home can gradually weaken ties to language, traditions, and identity. Through her years of leadership and cultural involvement, Dorie helped ensure that Filipino heritage remained visible and celebrated within migrant communities abroad.
Yet perhaps the most emotional chapter of her life came in 2019, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
For many people, illness can become a moment of retreat and silence. For Dorie, it became the beginning of artistic rebirth.
During her first chemotherapy session in January 2020, she returned to writing poetry—not for recognition, but for healing.
Her poems became a space where she could process fear, uncertainty, gratitude, faith, and resilience. Writing helped her confront emotional burdens while also inspiring others facing their own struggles.
Ambassador Sta. Maria-Thomeczek directly acknowledged this remarkable transformation in her endorsement.
“How admirable that Dorie showed us how to transcend the trauma of cancer, move forward, and unpack more creative talents along the way,” the ambassador stated.
Over time, Dorie’s poetry gained recognition in literary communities both in Europe and the Philippines. Writing primarily in Filipino, she explored themes of healing, memory, courage, womanhood, survival, and identity.
Her literary collections, including Tala at Tula ni Dorie Reyes Polo and Hibla ng mga Tula sa Anit ng Gunita, became reflections of deeply personal experiences transformed into art.
The ambassador also praised Dorie’s continued use of the Filipino language despite having spent many years living abroad.
“In spite of her long years in Germany, her Pilipino was still crisp and clear; she wrote most of her poems in the native language,” she wrote.
That observation carries important cultural meaning. For many Filipinos overseas, language remains one of the strongest connections to heritage and identity. Through poetry written in Filipino, Dorie Reyes Polo preserved not only personal stories, but also cultural memory.
Today, she is recognized not only as a poet, but also as a visual artist, community leader, and advocate for hope and healing through creative expression. Her works and story continue reaching audiences through literary festivals, magazines, international features, and Filipino cultural platforms.
The endorsement letter concludes with Ambassador Sta. Maria-Thomeczek expressing hope for a “positive consideration” of Dorie Reyes Polo’s nomination for the Pamana Presidential Award.
Yet beyond formal recognition, the endorsement ultimately highlights something more meaningful—a life defined by compassion, resilience, service, creativity, and pride in being Filipino.
From healthcare to literature, from community leadership to artistic expression, Dorie Reyes Polo’s journey continues to stand as an example of what Filipinos abroad can achieve while remaining deeply connected to their culture and humanity.
And through the words of a former Philippine ambassador who witnessed those contributions firsthand, her story now carries even greater significance—not simply as a personal achievement, but as a reflection of Filipino excellence carried across borders.
